Gum Recession Symptoms

Many people with gum recession most commonly experience increased tooth sensitivity and are more susceptible to decay or infection

Other common symptoms include teeth that appear longer than the others, loose teeth or a notch at the gum line. When the gums are restored with a gum grafting procedure, less of the tooth is exposed and more of the tooth is protected. In turn, the risk of infection decreases, sensitivity is reduced and the overall health of the mouth and gums is improved.

Benefits of Gum Grafting

  • Prevents further gum recession
  • Reduces risk of bone loss
  • Protects the tooth
  • Reduces risk of gum disease
  • Improves the appearance of the smile
  • Prevents cavities below gum line

Gum Recession Treatment Process

Gum grafting for treating gum recession is a surgical procedure and can help to improve your overall oral health as well as the appearance of your smile.

The gum grafting procedure begins with a consultation with us in Jacksonville, AL. He may measure the areas where the gums have receded. He will determine what type of material to use for the graft, such as existing gum tissue or a flap to tissue from the roof of the mouth. On the day of surgery, you will be completely numb during treatment and may also be offered another sedation option  to help you feel completely comfortable. We will then gently peel back the gums where recession occurs, add the new tissue between the gums and tooth to cover the receded area(s), and stitch the gums back in place.  The gums heal relatively quickly but you will be given post-op instructions to protect the gums and speed up recovery.
